Titus 1:1-4

Welcome to a new study!!! Last year we walked through Ephesians. This last summer we studied how to know God's will. Now we are headed back to a book study: TITUS!

This week we will be diving into Titus 1:1-4. Use the steps below to focus your quiet time each day. Be intentional to sit down with the Lord and wrestle with the text.

Last week we walked together as a group through the overview of Titus. We saw that Paul is writing to Titus in Crete where Paul left him to appoint elders and overseers in every city. We saw that there is a problem that has risen up, there are rebellious men who are not speaking the Truth and confusing entire families. The main key words we saw were: good deeds and sound doctrine. We focused on Titus 2:7-8 as the main theme.

Now before we get started remember the steps we will be doing are:

Observation: What does the text say?

  •   Look for the obvious and read with a purpose
  •   Marking key words
  •   Making lists

Interpretation: What does the text mean?

  •   Remember the context of the book
  •   Look up key words using Blue Letter Bible
  •   Look up cross references

Application: How does the meaning of the text apply to my life?

  •   How does this affect my belief or what I know to be true?
  •   How does this affect the way I live my life?

Observation:
1. Read through the entire book of Titus.
2. Read Titus chapter 1
3. Read Titus 1:1-4

  •   Ask these questions and write the answers in your journal:
  •   List in your journal how Paul describes himself in these verses
  •   For what does Paul describe himself as a bondservant and an apostle?
  •   What is the knowledge of truth according to?
  •   How does this fit into the context of the entire book? (sound doctrine and good deeds)

Interpretation:
Look up the following key words using Blue Letter Bible and write down what you learn about them in your journal:

  • bondservant
  • apostle
  • faith
  • chosen
  • knowledge
  • of the truth
  • godliness
We want to ask ourselves what does it mean to be chosen of God and have a knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness? According to the definition you looked at, can you pull together some understanding of what these phrases mean?

Let's look at the cross references and write down how they help us understand these phrases.

Look up the following verses and write down what you learn about being chosen of God:
  • Colossians 3:12
  • 2 Timothy 2:10
  • 1 Peter 2:9-10
Look up the following verses and write down what you learn about the knowledge of truth:
  • Ephesians 1:17
  • Philippians 1:8-10
  • Colossians 1:9-10
  • 2 Timothy 2:24-26
  • 2 Peter 1:2-3
Application:
Finish this weeks study in prayer, ask the Lord to show you how these verses apply specifically to your life. Write down any thoughts in your journal and come to Bible Study ready to discuss.

Ephesians 6:17: Salvation and the Word of God

Last week we talked about the shoes of the gospel and the shield of faith. We saw that these characteristics are found in Jesus Himself. This week we will look at the final two pieces of armor.

Start this week by reading Ephesians 6:10-17. What are the last two pieces of armor? Write down in your journal what the pieces are and why they are given.

Word Studies:
Looking at our two verses this week what are some word studies you think we should do? Remember to look for words that stick out to you or words that are key words (and will help us unlock the meaning of the text).

Ephesians 6:10-17 Truth and Righteousness

Last week we studied and talked about spiritual warfare in general. We discussed the important action of standing firm in the strength and might of God (not our own). It's His armor we wear, not our own. We talked about the enemy and what the Bible says about him.

This week we will begin our study of the pieces of the armor of God. Last week you numbered each armor piece. Our focus this week will be on the Belt of Truth and the Breastplate of Righteousness.

Word Studies:
I want you to look at the words truth and righteousness in the greek. Using Blue letter Bible do a word study on these two words and any other words that stick out to you.

Ephesian 6:10-17 Put on Your Armor

Hey Ladies, I am going to ask you to walk into the next few weeks with wisdom. We will be talking about spiritual warfare, so be on the look out for warfare in your life.

Read Ephesians 6:10-17 and mark these words: armor and stand firm. Read back through it, underline and number each armor piece.

Before we dive into the armor pieces, I want us to ask why and how about the armor as a whole. So this week our main focus is verses 10-13. Read through verses 10-17 and write anything that answers why or how about the armor in general (don't look at the specific pieces of the armor).

Word Studies:
Look at verses 10-13 and do word studies on the words or phrases that stick out to you. Remember our goal is to understand what the text means, so we want to understand what we are being called to do and want to study it deeper.

Cross References:
Look up these verses and write down what you learn about spiritual warfare and the enemy. Ask yourself how does the enemy work:
  • Job 1
  • John 8:44

Ephesians 6:9

Hey ladies! Last week I gave you the task of doing all of your studying on your own. I am super proud of those of you who tried! You did such a great job! This week will be very similar. (YOU CAN DO IT)

Read: Ephesians 6:1-9. Ask yourself what do you learn about masters?

Listing
Make a list on what you learn about masters and any instructions for them

Key Words
What key words stick out to you in this passage? I pray you are becoming more confident each week. What words describe an action, are descriptive, or bring meaning into the text? Look up those words.

Cross References
I want you to look up verses on masters. In Blue letter Bible go to where you would do a typical Word Study on the word master. Scroll down. Look through and read the verses (there are a lot of pages of verses). Not all the verses apply to our context. Read through and find 3-5 verses (from different books) that help you understand the text in Ephesians 6:9. Remember we are looking for what we can learn about masters. Do you find any verses that give more instructions to masters? Are there any verses that give you context to who is a master? Do you see any big picture verses that connect to God or Jesus?

Great job ladies!! Can't wait to see you on Thursday!!!!

Ephesians 6:5-8

Let's continue our study in chapter 6 this week. We talked about parents and children...now we move on to slaves. I know, you think it doesn't apply to you. Do the work, marinate in the text and ask the Lord to show you Truth in His Word this week.

Read Ephesians 6:1-8. Recall that we have talked about what we are without Christ and who we are in Christ. In chapter 4 we saw this shift in the text where we learned that because of what Christ has done in us, it changes the way we live. We aren't to outwardly strive to be better or do better, but because Christ has so transformed us it changes everything in our lives. And this week we are learning more about how Christ's changing of our heart changes our actions.

Mark the word slaves/ servant and any pronouns in the text. Make a list of instructions that are given to slaves/servants. What are slaves to do? Why? How? Notice all the details.

Word Studies:
I pray you are feeling more confident doing your own word studies. Keep it up this week! What words describe an action, are descriptive, or bring meaning into the text? Look up those words. (I am not asking you to look up every word in the text.)

Cross References:
Have you ever wondered how I decide what verses we look up each week? It can take a lot of work. Sometimes I know there are similar passages in other places in Scripture, but other times I have to do it the old fashioned way: using a concordance or doing a word search on Blue Letter Bible. The other way you can find cross reference is built into the word study portion of Blue Letter Bible. If you scroll down to the bottom you will find every place in Scripture that word is used.

So here is what we are going to do. I want you to look up verses on servants/slaves. In Blue letter Bible go to where you would do a typical Word Study on the word slave/servant. Scroll down. Look through and read the verses (there are three pages of verses). Not all the verses apply to our context. Read through and find 3-5 verses (from different books) that help you understand the text in Ephesians 6. Remember we are look for what we can learn about slaves/ servants. Do you find any verses that give more instructions to servants? Are there any verses that give you context to who is a servant/slave? Do you see any big picture verses that connect to God or Jesus? (Don't be afraid of doing it wrong, just try and we will talk through it at Bible Study. I just want you to TRY. YOU CAN DO IT!!)

Come to Bible Study ready to discuss what you learned. If at any point you get stuck, call or text me and I will help you one of one. Don't get paralyzed by thinking you can't do it. If you have doubts I will help you work through them!

Read Ephesians 6:1-4. What instruction is given to parents? Write down your observation in your journal.

Word Studies
Last week you decided what key words to do a word study on. This week I want you to do that again. The tips I gave you were: look for action words or words you don't understand.

Cross References
Look up the references below and write down what you learn about the role of parents.

  • Colossians 3:21
  • Exodus 12:24-27

  • Joshua 4:4-7
  • John 1:12
  • 2 Cor 6:18

Ephesians 6:1-3

Welcome to chapter 6 ladies!!! I believe our journey through Ephesians will be over soon.

Let's begin chapter 6 by reading through the entire chapter. Remember to read with a purpose. Look for the main themes or ideas in the chapter. Look for paragraph divisions.

Write down in your notes the main divisions of the chapter and the main idea in that paragraph (remember to use words from the text, don't paraphrase!!!)

Now let's look at the first paragraph division: Ephesians 6:1-3. Who is Paul speaking to specifically in this section? Let's mark who Paul is speaking to in Ephesians 6:1-3.

Paul is continuing his discussion on the family. He is now talking to children. What instructions does Paul give the children? Write down the answers in your notes.

Key Words:
Looking through this section of the text, what key words pop out to you that you think we should look up? Using Blue letter Bible look up those key words (don't make this too hard. What words do you not understand? What words are action words in the text? We always want to understand what the action words mean since those are the actions in the text we are often called to obey).

Cross References:
Look up these verses and write down in your journal what you learn about the role of children.

  • Exodus 20:12
  • Colossians 3:20
  • Acts 17:28-31

Ephesians 5:22-33 Husbands and Wives

This week we will focus on marriage from Ephesians 5:22-33. There is a major lesson this week that I am praying that you see. Marriage is so beyond us and is a bigger picture of something awesome. Let's investigate the text and see what we can learn.

Read Ephesians 5:22-33 and mark husband, wife, subject/submit, and love.

What do you learn about husbands and wives? What are their roles in the family? Make a list on what you learn about husbands and make a list on what you learn about wives.

Do you see any comparisons in this part of the text? (Look for the word as) Write down in your journal the comparisons.

Look up these words in the Greek using Blue Letter Bible: love & subject/submit. Write down everything you learn.

What did you learn this week from the text? What role does a husband have? What does his role show/display? What role does a wife have? What does her role show/display? Is there a bigger picture of marriage? Is there purpose above ourselves in marriage? (Yes, there is) What is the grander purpose? Why does our role in marriage matter?

I am so looking forward to sharing together what we learned from the Word this week! Can't wait to see you!

Return to Ephesians

Hey Ladies! Any onemissing Ephesians like I have been??? Well it's time for us to dive back in!!!

I encourage you to spend some time this week reacquainting yourself with Ephesians. I would suggest you read the entire book in one setting to reestablish context of the text.

Our study this week takes us to Ephesians 5:17-21. Before we look at those verses, I want you to re-read verses 15-16 (or the entire chapter). Intentionally look for the context of what is being said. What is Paul saying in these verses?? What is the context? Remember that chapters 1-3 are all about Jesus and the Gospel. Chapter 4 turns us to looking at how we live because of the Gospel.

Now let's look at verses 17-21. Read through the verses and look for two contrasts (we can usually find a contrast by looking for a word but). Write down in your journal the contrasts that you see.

What are believers to not do according to this passage? Make a list.

What are believers to do according to this passage? Make a list.

Look up these greek words using Blue Letter Bible: foolish, understand, dissipation, subject.

Look up these cross references and write down what you learn to help interpret this passage:
