Titus 1:5-9

In Titus 1 we see a profile of two types of people. As you study this week we will focus on one of those two types. This week our focus will be on the Godly people of Titus 1.

Observation:
  • Read Titus 1:1-9 focusing on verses 5-9.
  • Go back and read verses 5-9 and look for what you can learn about overseers/elders
  • In your journal make a list of everything you learn about elders/overseers
  • Ask yourself these questions and write the answers in your journal:
    • In verse 6 what aspect of life does Paul deal with?
    • What does verse 7 tell you about the overseer and what term of contrast is used in verse 8 regarding him?
    • Think about the man's relationship to the Word of God, what is he able to do (verse 9)?

Interpretation:
Look up the following definitions in the Greek using Blue Letter Bible and write down what you learn in your journal:
  • Elder
  • above reproach
  • dissipation
  • rebellion
  • Overseer
  • self-willed
  • quick tempered
  • addicted to wine
  • pugnacious
  • fond of sordid gain
  • hospitable
  • loving what is good
  • sensible
  • just
  • devout
  • self-controlled
  • hold fast
  • exhort
  • sound
  • doctrine
  • refute
Look up the following cross references and write down what you learn about elder/overseers in your journal:
  • 1 Timothy 3:1-7
  • 1 Peter 5:1-4

Application:
What have you learned this week about elders/overseers? What kind of men are they called to be? What is their role inside the church? What office would we call these men?
