I encourage you to spend some time this week reacquainting yourself with Ephesians. I would suggest you read the entire book in one setting to reestablish context of the text.
Our study this week takes us to Ephesians 5:17-21. Before we look at those verses, I want you to re-read verses 15-16 (or the entire chapter). Intentionally look for the context of what is being said. What is Paul saying in these verses?? What is the context? Remember that chapters 1-3 are all about Jesus and the Gospel. Chapter 4 turns us to looking at how we live because of the Gospel.
Now let's look at verses 17-21. Read through the verses and look for two contrasts (we can usually find a contrast by looking for a word but). Write down in your journal the contrasts that you see.
What are believers to not do according to this passage? Make a list.
What are believers to do according to this passage? Make a list.
Look up these greek words using Blue Letter Bible: foolish, understand, dissipation, subject.
Look up these cross references and write down what you learn to help interpret this passage:
- 1 Corinthians 10:23-33
- 1 Timothy 3:1-13
- Acts 2:1-21
What did the Lord show you in His Word this week? Write down any thoughts in your journal. Was there something new you saw in Scripture? Something that needs to change about the way you believe or how you live your life?
